Maybe…
Great advice right? Unfortunately, that answer is correct. Supplements like herbals and vitamins are interesting and often confusing. On one hand our bodies are incredibly efficient machines. If you have a reasonably good diet and no pathological deficit of vitamins and minerals you probably don’t need a supplement.
However, if your are “normal” (Normal is sarcastically defined as often relying on beer, cola, chips, high stress, not enough exercise and a well used couch) and your diet is questionable or you are older than 25 yrs you may have some natural or induced need for supplements.
Supplements are overseen by the FDA. But unlike their medication cousins, supplements are considered to be more like food than drugs. They do not have to prove that they are safe or even that they work. They also have less stringent manufacturing oversight and are not necessarily consistent from one bottle to the next. Supplements are held to one standard though that you should be aware of. Supplements do not treat, cure or diagnose any disease states or conditions. This doesn’t mean they are not beneficial. It simply means that herbals and vitamins “supplement” the body’s normal processes to keep it in a healthy place. We sometimes call that homeostasis which is a fancy medical term meaning balance.
Some of my favorite supplements are omega 3 fish oil (not krill oil), pantothenic acid, CoQ-10, Vit D3, probiotics, full spectrum hemp oil, and a good old fashion therapeutic strength multi-vitamin.
There are others that are amazing but those are a great place to start…if you need them.
