Should you buy brand name or generic drugs?
The FDA has such stringent requirements that for the most part generic drugs are the preferred choice due to cost. There are a few exceptions to this rule though.
If you take Warfarin, Digoxin, Theophylline or Levothyroxine you might want to consider the brand name alternative or least ask your pharmacist to provide the same generic manufacturer each time you get your prescription filled.
This is because these four drugs are considered “narrow therapeutic index” drugs, meaning the window of safe and effective drug concentration found in your blood is very small. If you have too much drug in your system you could have side effects and too little drug would result in little to no clinical benefit.
